BUSINESS INFORMATION
HOURS OF BUSINESS
William McAusland works 9am-5pm Pacific time, Monday to Friday,
however you can reach him via email or answering service 24 hours
a day, year round, which is great for those with hellish, unexpected
deadlines.
COMMUNICATIONS
As 90% of his clients do not live in Kamloops, nor even Canada,
this artist relies heavily on phone, fax and email to handle
communication with clients, and uses courier services for delivery
of finished images. Normally first contact with a client is made
via phone, with the rest of the job being conducted via email.
This arrangement keeps the phone bills low and allows transmission
of accurate gray scale or colour proofs. McAusland Studios is
both Mac and PC compatible, however he can work with non-digitally
outfitted clients via fax, mail and phone.
PRICE
The artist can work within a wide range of budget sizes. Typically,
he provides a high end and low end quote. The low quote is 'best
case scenario' as in cases when all goes well, the drawings meet
with approval early on in the project, and the final painting
requires no changes. The high end quote is used to give the client
an idea of the most the job will cost, a 'surface ceiling' which
will not be exceeded unless unforeseen additions or late changes
are requested by the client; such as if after the sketches are
approved and painting has proceeded, the client requests for
additional items or figures in a painting, or a format change
or final size change to the illustration surface area, etc. These
changes are unlikely as such details are typically worked out
long before in a pencil sketch.
DEPOSIT
A 50% deposit is required after the client approves of the pencil
renderings and the okay is given for the artist to proceed with
the illustration. McAusland usually starts work at once on the
final before the deposit check arrives in the mail. The original
art will not be mailed or couriered until the deposit arrives.
The deposit amount is established by adding the low and high
quotes together, this sum divided by two, thus giving the anticipated
illustration cost, this is then again divided by two to produce
the deposit amount.
FINAL PAYMENT
The remaining fifty percent is due 30 days after the client receives
the original artwork and invoice. Payment must be in Canadian
dollars from Canadian clients, while in U.S. Dollars from all
other countries.
IMAGE RIGHTS
Unless a special arrangement is arrived at, the client owns the
exclusive worldwide rights to an image for three years, and thereafter
without exclusive rights. The original illustration, however,
is returned to the artist following the job's completion (publication),
and can be released as a stock image after the three year usage
period is up. Prior to the three year usage period, the artist
does reserve the right to use the illustration in self promotional
materials, such as a web site or any potential book or article
about the artist. Full credit to the client will be given. Outright
purchase of 'on-going' and 'exclusive usage', as well as ownership
of original art can be discussed at any time.
THE PHYSICAL WORK
William McAusland works in quick drying, non-toxic, lightfast
acrylic colours on textured illustration board. This medium allows
an image to be worked on without the delays of drying time associated
with oils, nor the fragile nature of watercolors. Most financial
and spot illustrations are rendered letter size, (8 x10 inches
or so) to facilitate cost effective, flatbed scanning at both
ends of the job. The surface of the art is basically plastic,
and will not scratch the scanner bed nor run if moisture should
happen to reach the illustration.
ARTIST'S
STATEMENT
"I produce a great variety of work, including fine art,
and the samples presented throughout this site are by no means
the limit of my scope in either subject matter nor style. I welcome
all questions and feedback regarding the work seen herein, and
if you have a special project in mind and don't see a specific
example of art that pertains to your illustration needs, send
me an email anyhow and I'll be happy to discuss it with you.
