Well it has been a
year since the last issue as I've been so busy with assignments
and personal projects that I simply haven't had time to update
my site. I do have five images to showcase here, all shown
above, which I am quite fond of.
The first image is
for Scholastic Canada and is a full page illustration for a
Rankin's family song titled Gillis Mountain. I haven't received
my contributor copy yet, but when I do I will scan it and show
you the cover and add a link where you can buy it. This scene of
a girl writing on a notepad, looking thoughtful as she sits on
the ruins wall of some old homestead, while her family is at a
picnic blanket on a wind swept hill, really appeals to me.
There is something about it that reminds me of my own childhood,
filled with sunny summer days, being carefree and drawing daily.
I hope my own children can experience life with the same
optimism and hope that I enjoyed in my youth.
The next images, all
shown as thumbnails linking them to their full size portfolio
pages, offer highlights form the past few months of commercial
illustration. I did a few very involved jobs for the Kamloops
Art gallery this past year and used a new medium; digital oil
paint. Basically it's a coloured drawing, scanned into a
computer program and then painted over with my wacom stylus and
tablet to achieve a buttery, thick bodied oil painting look,
without the fumes and unacceptable drying times of the real
thing. While this medium isn't ideal for all subject matter nor
small scale works, it is excellent for a loose, painterly feel.
Quite the opposite
from the previous loose oils are two architectural renderings I
pulled off this past year, namely the Golden Vista Suites
apartments, soon to be built in Kamloops by trophy Developments,
and the YM-YWCA Dream home lottery house, located in Sun Peaks,
also in Kamloops. The image of the dream home was published with
rock work in the final version, but I much prefer the lawn look
just to avoid cluttering the scene, although I am no fan of
lawns in real life and would like to turn ours into veggie
gardens or shrubs and flowers.
Looking ahead, I am
working on properly key wording this site, and getting down to
some determined promotion of my illustration service, perhaps
even looking for an illustration rep in the USA.
I've recently removed
my stock illustration collection from the Ispot.com, as sales
which had normally been quite nice, stopped over the year and so
I am looking to find a new home for my rather extensive
collection. I am also looking into the possibility of selling my
own stock images until I find them all a good , profitable
home. With regards to the Ispot and the staff there, I have
really enjoyed my involvement and really liked the team over
there. I will update this site as soon as the stock images are
online, regardless of their new venue.
Best regards,
Will
